spark test

what is the best way to field test for spark on a early 70's merc 115 straight 6 cyl.By field test i mean is there a way to ground the plug and turn the engine over and see what quality of spark i am getting ( or no spark at all ) and is there a simple device one could build to test the spark. Thanks

Pull the plugs, reattach the spark plug wires, wrap a bare copper wire around each plug threads one after the other, ground the loose wire end under any engine bolt or screw.
