To set the timing on a motor when it is not running, do you have to have a spark tester on each plug wire, or only on the plug wire the timing light is on. Can you use one spark tester and leave the rest of the wires attached to the plugs?

You can remove all the plugs so the engine will spin free but all the sparkplug wires must be gounded or it'll play hel* with the powerpacks.

c/6

Hooty

Just one question i´v been wondering:

When some one advises to try to pull the plugs one at a time, while the motor is running, how do you avoid damaging the power pack ??

Re: Spark tester

That's a good question. I, personally, don't do it. I've got a spark gap checker and I just install it and short one plug out at a time.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Spark tester

ive heard u can damage the power pack if you dont ground the plugs when cranking- dunno if thats true as long as one plug grounds...

Re: Spark tester

If you start pulling plug wires on these new DFI motors with muti-strike ignition they will hurt you!! Use a good spark tester properly grounded or in-line.

Re: Spark tester

ftthom to finally answer your question... If you only have one spark plug wire un hooked(spark plugs in) the engine will start. DONT want to do that.. with a spark tester you can static time your engine,(refer to the manual) usually 2degrees retarded (cause cranking speed). If you start pulling plug wires( to check for a dead cyl) use plastic(fuse puller) pliers. but that has nothing to do with setting your timing.

Re: Spark tester

I am kinda wondering why you can't set the timing while motor is running. only thing I can come up with is the solid state ignition is controling timing at low RPM, so you won't be able to get the right reading at idle with the timer base all the way against the stop.

For whatever reason people have taken the time to write down the procedure on how to do it cranking the motor with plugs out(so it don't start) and to get the cranking speed up. So... I will do it that way! Thanks Joe :)

Re: Spark tester

you can,you just dont want to rev your engine up to 5-6000 rpm without a load. DONT DO IT ON A WATER HOSE....If you want to adj wot timing going across the lake or with a test prop(simulates load on engine) thats fine. If you do it on the water bring a someone to drive!!!!

You can also do a wfo timing on the trailer with the boat backed into the water and prop on. Just be sure the boat is secured to the trailer and won't run over your tow vehicle. Still a two person job.

c/6

Hooty
