Let me see if I can explain this right.
I bought this motor new in 2002 and the first set of plugs (NGK BPR6ES) lasted two years before the started to misfire in the heat of July in southern Ontario.
When I took then out they were tan color and dry. Looked good but I replaced then anyway.

The engine ran fine the rest of the summer. Then in July the next year they started to miss again so I replaced them again and everything was fine again.
I have done this every year since.

I noticed that the new 2007 plug chart link I found that it now lists Champion QL78YC as the plug for this motor. The 2005 chart listed the NGK as does the sticker on the boat.

My question:
Is this plug QL78YC safe to use in this motor?

Thanks

There is a 70hp 2-stroke that uses the Champion QL78YC plugs and a 70 hp 4-stroke (made by Suzuki) that uses the NGK plug

Which one do you have?

What is the complete model number on the motor?

It is the Suzuki and it says to use the NGK BPR6ES.
The Model No. is E70PL4SI

I couldn't find any Champion QL78YC in my area.

I'm running Champion RC9YC in it right now, as this is what the Champion chart says to put in and they seem to run ok.
At least today in a 30 minute run up the lake.

I would have thought that I should get more than one year out of a set of plugs. I might put 40 hrs on the motor, the rest is on the electric motor fishing.

Cannot comment on the life of your plugs. (carb settings correct? tan colour sounds OK! plug gap correct?)

Def try to stick to the recommended NGK plugs (BPR6ES)

As far as I can tell the RC9YC are the equivalent of NGK BCPR6ES and the only difference between those and the recommended plugs is the hexagon size. 5/8" (16mm) instead of 20.8 mm (13/16")

As far as i can see the Champion equivalent of NGK BRP6ES would be RN9YC

QL78YC would appear to be wrong because it is an inductively suppressed plug (Q) instead of a resistively suppressed plug (R) and also because at 1/2" it is a shorter reach than the recommended plug which is 19mm (3/4").

Hope that helps.

Confused ?
My head is spinning reading the codes and comparing sizes in inches with sizes in mm.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I'm going to get some RN9YC and run them the rest of the year. I'll keep them in next year and see if they break down in the hot weather.
