i need to install a new stereo the problem is the old stereo used box style speakers that just mount.. should i just stick with the box style that are already enclosed or cut the fiberglass under the consoles to install conventional 6.5inch marine speakers? how hard and what precautions should i take when cutting the console?

I'd take the oportunity to improve space utilization by installing conventional speakers.

It's a little bit harder than plywood and more likely to splinter. Fiberglass dust is bad for ya, take precautions against breathing it. Sawzall is faster but fine blade jigsaw leaves a better edge. Use a fine blade and masking tape to cut down on splintering. Dremel with sanding barrel is handy for fine-tuning the shape of your cut.

Measure three times cut once.
