Several websites and my manual call for special tools to remove and replace gimbal, bellows, and u joints. Which tools are required and which ones are optional? How much do they cost?
If I don't own these and they are expensive, am I better off just to take it in to the mechanic?

Here is what one website said was needed. What do you think?
Mercruiser Hinge Pin tool Part# 91-78310
Slide hammer tool Part#91-34569A1
Bellows expander tool to install exhaust bellows Part#91-45497A1.
Shift cable socket Part#91-12037 (might not be needed!)
Gimbal bearing driver Part#91-32325
Driver rod Part# 91-37323
Thanks

if you are starting with nothing you have a long road ahead. if you plan to keep the boat a long time and do your own work invest in the right tools. i would suggest ebay as an alternative for some special tools.

Bob, On my Alpha-1 drive, 3/8" (I think) bolt connectors will remove the bell housing, using a socket wrench. The U-joints can be removed with a punch and c-clamp (or hammer). The upper gearcase nut behind the u-joints can be removed with a big pipe wrench or Stilson (strap) wrench. The bellows can be done without the expander, simply install driveshaft and exhaust bellows on the bell housing first, and use a blunt tire iron to push them onto the transom plate. A universal puller can be used to pull the bearing carrier. The bearing carrier nut can be a problem if you do not have the special spanner.

Bob, On the otherhand, the aftermarket replacement outdrives are $2000. The best thing to do is take good care (regular maintenance) of the outdrive, and if the gears (top or bottom) fail, replace the entire top or botom gearcase for a grand.

Now that's what I like to hear!!I've been able to do alot on my OMC drive without special tools, but I've always wondered if the mercs were the same way.

Re: Special Tools for drive repair?

This post is in reply to supercab78's comments on omc special tools. Could you share with us the items you use on repairs on omc out drives. I too would like to make my own repairs, being mechanically inclined and not having any good experiences with local "omc trained technicians".Thanks in advance.
