Special Tools for Powerhead Rebuild?

I just got my manual for my '93 40HP that needs to be rebuilt. It mentions the following "special" tools:

OMC Puller Bridge and OMC Small Puller (to remove lower crankcase seals)
OMC Cone and OMC Driver (for wrist pin)
OMC Rod Cap Alignment Fixture (for rod bolts)

Are these critical must-have tools?

Oh, and is the following OMC OEM products recommended or are there suitable (and local) replacements?

OMC Locquic Primer
Gel-Seal II
OMC Triple-Guard Grease
OMC Gasket Sealing Compound

Thanks in advance!

Has no one here done a power head rebuild themselves?

You are going to be ordering parts from a dealer anyway, why do you resist ordering the proper sealants? With the money you are going to be spending, cost can't be that big an issue.

You do need the proper sealant for the crankcase halves, or at least a suitable substitute. Just any old sealer won't do.

I love that OMC/BRP Gasket sealant or Mercury's Perfect Seal for gaskets.

Does it mention a 5/16" 12 point socket for the rod bolts? It has to be thin wall and very strong...like a Snap-On.

And suitable torque wrenches. Do not under any circumstances guess at the torques!!!!

I'm not opposed to buying the OEM, just wanted to know if it was necessary or if something else was preferred.

Allright, powerhead is off. I need to remove the lower head seal. Would a typical hook type seal puller be adequate? What's the trick here? Can I not take these off AFTER I split the case and take the crankshaft out?

Should be fine...or if it is stubborn just wait until you remove the bearing assembly from the crank and tap it out from the inside.

OMC Triple-Guard Grease

I love that stuff.

I put it on everything around the house, cars, bikes, scateboard, you name it, i use it on it. I even got some on my surf board once.

I agree that triple guard is some great stuff. You CAN use lots of products that are available at your local auto parts store. If you are ordering parts just order some gelseal 2, but if you forget to loctite 518 or permatex 51813 will work just fine.
