Went to the lake today and was running up lake WOT
and it was like we lost 5 to 8 mph for just a couple of seconds. The motor never lost or gained rpm.It happened twice. We had a head wind and chop in the water. It was like a very strong under current just slowed us down. Any ideas????

XP150,

Could have snagged a plastic bag, some seaweed (or lakeweed), submerged line. Something not rigid that stuck for a few seconds then let go.

Just a thought.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Happened to me once too. Then we saw the dog treading water some yards behind the boat! (No harm to the dog.) He loved to lean way out over the bow of our 12' car-topper when the 10HP was wide open, which gave us an extra MPH or two. Seems he liked low flying ducks better.

Since it happened to you twice, you must not have had a dog along. ...or did you have 2?

Re: Speed bump????????

Did you by chance hit some very glassy water? My speedboat loses a couple of MPH on the smooth stuff probably due to increased surface tension or lack of turbulence under the wetted hull. I doubt if you would lose 5 to 8 MPH from this though unles you were doing 100 MPH or so.

Re: Speed bump????????

Calico kid I was running about 65mph with a head wind and choppy water. I don't know how to
explain it, we just slowed down and a couple of seconds later we speeded back up.(twice in the same area) The motor never lost rpm's and the sound never changed. We were in about 20 ft of water so we did not drag bottom.
I have no idea what caused it, we ran on up the lake a few miles and came back down and it did not happen again.I was just curious if anyone else had ever experienced anything like it?

Wasn't one of them triangle things was it - like the one in Bermuda? Seriously, did the depth have a sudden change in the area? I read once that a sudden change can make hull do odd things.

BL...

Re: Speed bump????????

Well Hotbyte not sure about depth change, I was running too fast for depth finder to read but I do know that part of the lake and it about 20ft there. It would be about 25 or 26ft deep if we were not in a drought. Now they have closed all boat landings because of low water so I won't be bothered with this problem for a while.

Re: Speed bump????????

I go with the smooth water theory. Ripping along in a light chop [salt water, deep-v boat], it seems like my boat slows down when entering a patch of smooth water. Instruments don't change but just the feeling of speed. Maybe more wetted surface and more friction or maybe just imagination. Interesting.

Re: Speed bump????????

Well in case it may help someone else, I found out why I was lost speed.I had a power pack going bad and the over rev was kicking in for a split second and in the begining it would happen so fast I could not hear the engine change sound Then it got worst.I had it put on DYNO and found the problem.
