I am thinking about adding a hard-top to my 22 ft. walkaround. I have a 225 merc. and can run about 45 mph if I open her up. How much speed will I lose by adding an average size hard-top. Aluminum frame, fiberglass top, electronics box etc.

Re: speed loss when adding a hard top

You will be adding weight but little windage. I would think that the loss would be small....However if you set the angle or the top just right you may be able to gain a little lift, reduce the hull friction and retain the top speed.

Keep in mind that I am not a boat designer. :D

Re: speed loss when adding a hard top

Thanks Capt. Bob. I kinda thought that it would be a minimal loss weight wise. I just kept thinking of the top being a major wind catcher and add a lot of wind drag. I guess if the design is right it could help more than hurt. I guess there's a reason why so many peopl have them on their boats. **** , 1,000,000 screaming fisherman can't be wrong. Ha, Ha, Ha !!!!!!!! Thanks again.
