I/o 5.0 alpha one, merc. 2005. My speedometer stop working. I see a single black tub coming from the back side and center of the speedometer. I assume its not electrical but a presure control type. Where is the senser pickup? I rebuild the lower end out drive . . . so I'm thinking the pick up might be in the lower out drive by way of a small black tube I see, if thats it maybe I didn't get it back in right?

Search part #56973p. This should be what you need for pressure type speedo. Mounts on transom.

Raise the outdrive up and see if the hose is hooked up to the lower unit

I had this problem too. If the tube was hooked up properly like Don S suggested, the problem may be a plugged pickup on the leading edge of your outdrive. I disconnected the hose and blew compressed air up through the pickup hole. I got about 1/4 cup of mud out. I then disconnected my speedo at the dash and blew back through the line, if you have a helper here, have them watch the tube going to the outdrive they can tell you when it blows clean. If you get no air at the rear then you have a line problem.
Good luck

Re: speed omitor stop working

I have same issue. I have made sure the tube is connected, the speedo works when blowing air up the tube, I have blown air back down the connector and it sounds like the air is escaping inside the unit (3.0L 1994 Baja, Alpha 1 gen 2). I just had the lower pulled to fix a leak on the shift shaft so I thought they might have fixed it but no luck there. Is there something in there that is missing?

Thanks,
Greg
