speed then no speed

i have a 1985 sunbird, it was riding great, i idled down for wake speed, upon opening up to full throttle it barely moved, it sputtered like it wanted to cut off but didn't. i left it full throttle and after a few minutes it picked up to normal operation.could this problem be old gas going through the carburator? i have noticed that the gas tank has two lines, the one that gas goes in and a smaller one. when i put gas in the gas hose a liquid that i think is water comes out of the smaller one what is going on.

The smaller hose is your gas tank vent line. When gas fills your tank it lets air out or it would blow back up the filler hose.
It could be bad gas. It also could be a bad accelerator pump in the carb.
Need to know more info on what you have. Make model motor.

Could be water in the gas. It's difficult to say based on only one occurance, but it sounds fuel related.

it happened once before i throttled down to wake speed, once i throttled to full open it didn't get enough speed to get on plane. it backfired and cut off. i started it back up and this time when i went full throttle it ran like normal.

also can you tell me if the carburator of a volvo penta is enterexhchangable with the omc.

Believe it or not, Volvo Penta has used more than one carb in it's years of existance. But VP never used the 3.8 engine.

Truthfully, after this thread and some of your others, I don't think you have the know-how or basic mechanical abilities to be working on the the fuel system of a boat.
Before you ever pick up a wrench, you need to get an OEM service manual read, study, and understand it before trying to work on your boat.

i have mechanical knowledge for cars, ive just been told that marine engines should be treated different, so if i am set on the right path believe me it will get done and with precision. granted i am a novice with marine but i will (make it do what it do baby).

I agree with Don,....
Your posts would never lead a Mechanic to believe that you have Any Clue as to What you're trying to Do...........

so if i am set on the right path believe me it will get done and with precision.
OK,.........
Find a Shop Manual that covers Your Engine/ Driveline.........And Read it.........
where is the accelerator pump located at on the carb?
If you're as much of a Mechanic as you claim,........
That should be painfully Obvious.............

Shouldn't this be titled Rev then no Rev
:/
You have stated that you think water is coming out of your vent line from the gas tank, why are you worried about replacing the carb if you are not sure it even getting clean gas from the tank??

i was just looking for more options on what it could be, and trouble shoot each one until problem found, starting with an additive to the gas and working from there. i figure if i get more than one possiblity i could check each one after the other and not post each time

thanks i will look for a manual, i was just hoping after all the money i have put in this project boat i could have been put in the right direction without spending more money. but i guess what they say is true a boat is nothing but a hole in the water to throw money in. but i love the water so i guess i have to spend

Forget about just Adding an Additive to the Gas,+ Instead,....
Insure that you're getting a flow of Clean Gasoline to the Carb.......
If you want to Diagnose your Problem,.....
Start at the begining,+ Work your way Thru........

There's No sense in replacing the Carb if you Can't get Fresh, Clean Gas into it........

Re: speed then no speed

Maybe a few days late w/reply.....but
The best way to tell if its a fuel/tank problem is
to get a 6 gal outboard tank w/fresh gas.
Hook this up to your fuel pump inlet.
Then see how she runs.

After having problems already, you might want to
change your fuel filter at the carburator inlet.
Before running on the aux. tank.

Please be carefull:%:%
