Speeditwin fuel pump

Hey there, hoping someone has a solution.
First off, it's a 1964 evinrude Speeditwin 28hp (28452).

I took the fuel pump off and noticed that there was a bunch of gasket maker material surrounding the middle screw holding the plastic cap on it where the fuel line comes in.

When I tried to put it back, I realized that the material was there because the screw hole is stripped clean.

Are the fuel pumps generic, or are they made specifically for each motor?
can I just go to a store and buy a fuel pump??

Also, I would like to clean the carburator, but I am not too keen on taking it off because I am scared to mess it all up. Someone also told me not to use chemicals to clean it because of the age of the motor it might loosen the seals. I feel that the carburator is probably dirty because I was told that the boat sat for years in a garage. When I have it out on the water at full throttle, it goes fairly fast, but the motor sounds like it isn't going as fast as it should be, kinda sluggish, hard to describe, but it sounds like it should be going a little faster. I am guessing that a good carb cleaning would resolve this, or it couldn't hurt anyway.

Also, a question out of the blue, how exactly does a boat speedometer work??

Re: Speeditwin fuel pump

OMC changed fuel pumps about as often as I change socks. They list the one for yours as part #380016, superceded by 388685. Any Johnson or Evinrude dealer. There is no Sierra (iboats) interchange # listed for it, but that doesn't mean that one of theirs won't work.

If the carburetor isn't broke, don't fix it.

A speedometer has a forward-pointing tube fixed to the transom. Water pressure from the forward motion of the boat is applied to that tube (called a Pitot tube). The speedometer is merely a pressure guage, reading the pitot pressure.

Thanks for the advice, I will leave the carburator alone for now and get an OMC pump from my local dealer.
