Speedo Help Please

My 1975 85hp Johnson throttle cable broke, the conduit part of the cable ( black rubber cover ) came out of the metal part at the end of the cable that holdeds it in. I replaced it and the same thing happened, I slowly pulled out of the dock, got to open water gave full throttle and nothing, same broken cable. Has anyone else experience this.

The cable is held by opposing set screws in the casing guide - is that where the cable broke?

I been trying to post a picture, can't get it, there's no screws but each end of the black cable covering goes into a brass sleeve, the brass sleeve crimps around the black cover, that is were the black cable cover came out.
