Im gonna say its your tube. Check it and if it is, let us know and will talk you through replacing it. Very simple....

The speedometer is a mechanical device -- no electrics involved. Chances are a piece of debris has clogged the tiny hole in the pitot.

Re: Speedo not working..

Thank you for the welcome and the advice..It seems that wood has blocked the inlet hole in the L/U.. I dug out what I could.. I need to get some small drill bits to bore out the wood..It is jammed in there..

You could also take the tube off and try to blow backward with compressed air.

blow it backwards with compressed air. and then blow into tube. just your lung pressure should get it up 3-5 mph. for what its worth this type of speedo is very acurate. gps is the best.

Re: Speedo not working..

Mine is not working either, I haven't used it in years. My kids are of age to drive the boat now and I want them to get the feel of the speed what it feels like at different speeds. This is the problem I replaced the lower unit a few years ago, same type and all. But I for got how to get the tube back down in the lower unit. Does it goes in where the shift linkage is. For the life of me I just cant remember. Thanks for the help guys, best site on the web....... at least when it comes to boats.

oh its a 1988 mercury 135 v6 factory Sea ray.

Re: Speedo not working..

Used a 1/16 bit to slowly clean out the inlet hole on the skeg.. Light pressure and a slow speed were enough.. Out came some wood, then wet sand, and some water... Disconnected the tube at the speedo and set up my compressor.. Had my son place his hand over the inlet. Hit the air and she was clean!...thanks all for the help..

You probably had this answered already, been a while since I have been on. Yes, the tube goes where the shift linkage connects to the lower unit (right in front of it).
