My Uncle just bought a 1997 Welcraft/Excel 19' bow rider, with a Volvo/Penta 4.3 GL motor anda Cobra outdrive. neither the speedo or Trim indicator work.

I think the speedo is probaly clogged, but before I do something stupid, I will ask. On the transom there is a white do hicky?? I think this is the speedo pickup, it looks like there should be a 1/16" hole in the end that is cake with mud. where it mounts to the transom, it looks like 1/8" tubing going up and then thru the transom. I do not think it is the transducer, I have not found that yet, It is mounted way to high, and looks way to thin. Do I run a wire to clean the mud out?

second question, How can I test the Trim Gauge to see if that is bad, and how can I find and test the trim sending unit?

If the Transducer for the depth finder is a Shoot thru the hull type, where would I find it? (I know in the bilge, and just look!!!)

I have only seen the boat once, 2 hours in the water and 5 minutes at the ramp. So i know some of the questions and descriptions are very lame, but tomorrow night I am going to try to help hoim trouble shoot some of the minor problems.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Speedo & Trim indicator questions

Well, he has a Volvo SX (singleprop) drive. Or a DP-S (duoprop drive). On the outside they look like a Cobra, but inside they are Volvo. Besides, OMC didn't exist anymore in 97 ;)
Anyways, Yep, the white thingy with the mud clog is the speedometer. Clear the mud and it should work. The tube goes to the helm and water pressure shows as speed on the speedometer. Not real accurate, but tells you your moving slow or fast.
The trim sender is probably the cause for the gauge not working. If it is truly the SX drive there are some resistance measurements you can take on the sender. Get the engine Model Number (numbers and letters) off the engine and I will see what I can find for you.

Re: Speedo & Trim indicator questions

Don,

Thanks. It is a single prop drive.

I think I am going to be looking at it tonight, depending on the weather. If so I will get the nembers. The Speedo should be easy.
