Speedometer damaged?

I whacked a piece of underwater debris (likely a log) and now my speedometer reads a constant 15 mph. I noticed a small, pre-drilled hole on the front of the lower unit. It appears to be clogged with wood particles. Is this the speedo pick-up? And if so, is there a way to clean it out? Using a small piece of wire was unsuccesful, and seems to be pushing the obstruction in farther. Thanks for your help. It was actually pretty accurate, so I'd like to repair it.

Re: Speedometer damaged?

you are on the right track. take a drill bit the size of the hole and gently drill out the obstruction by turning with your fingers or a pin vise, good luck

Also try to blow from the lower end - compressed air if you have access - while you 'drill'.

Rockytop:

Your suggestion worked like a charm. I started with a very small drill bit, and worked my way up. It pulled the wood out instead of pushing it in. By the amount of water that poured out of the hole, I assume it was successful. We'll find out tomorrow when we're on the water. Thanks much.
