I have a nice speedometer but the pickup on the ransom always collects a piece of seaweed and that's the end of the speedo info unless I stop and back up to clear it.
When I had the lower unit off the other day I was noticing this little *** sticking up at the very front of the lower unit, did not know what it was, so some research later I found that this is for a speedometer hose connection and the hole that feeds water is much lower down in the water then the transom pickup, almost a foot lower.
Just got done re-routing the speedo hose, will see how it works later this week when I take it out.

Oh yea Bill, my Mercury inline six 115HP had the pitot tube pickup in the front of the lower foot section casing, and it worked pretty good most of the time. However, when I got home and the speedometer was still saying I was going 40MPH, I knew that tube was plugged again. So a little effort and it would be cleared and the speed reading would droop to zero again. So it is just part of boating I guess. If you put anything in front of that tube to keep it clear, then the speed reading will be even more questionable... JMHO!
