Hello everyone,
I just bought a 1985 Procraft 1750v with a Johnson 1985 85 hp engine. The Boat and engine are in excellent condition. However the speedometer does not work. The guy I bought the boat from said it has always worked fine but the last couple of times he had it out it wasn't working. Would anyone have any suggestions on where I should start to problem solve. I can post pictures of the meter and the device that is connected to the back of the boat if that would help. I was thinking some kind of wiring issue but he said it doesn't use electronics it is operated by vacuum pressure? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It uses what is called a pitot tube,in theory, the faster the boat goes the more vacuum is applied to the tube the faster the speedo shows.
The reality is even when they do work they probably aren't reading correctly.

I have read where people will disconect the tube from the back of the speedo and blow some compressed air to back flush it, but like I said it may work but more than likely won't be right.

The solution is of coarse is a GPS unit, they are always right and you have the added benifit of being able to mark good fishing spots.
So you can fix your current speedo until it quits again or get a GPS.
