I just got a used lower unit in trade for my froze one. The motor is a force 120.

The problem is my speedometer doesnt work. Nothing registeres anymore. I connected the tube that comes out of the lower unit to my tube that goes to the meter. The old lower unit was set up the same way and it worked fine. Any idea why this one doesnt? Do these things plug up or something? Where do they get their readings from?

Thanks,
Joey

Re: Speedometer problem

I think I read in a previous post that there is a small hole in front of the lower unit which takes in water for this. Sometimes this will get plugged up or in some cases when the lower unit was painted, it gets covered. Check the hole in front, and get some air into it (compresser or canned air) while someone checks the gauge. Let us know what you find.

Are you talking about the vents on the side of the lower unit that you would hook the muffs up to? I dont recall seeing a hole on the front of the unit. I will check again when I get home.

Joey

In the front of the lower unit where it comes to a point. There should be a small hole there,
if you can't find it, then it probably is plugged.

Joey, if and when you get your speedometer problem fixed and if you have a GPS receiver, do a mph comparision check and let us know the results.

the hole should be on the leading edge of the skeg, the hole is probably stopped up.

Re: Speedometer problem

Sorry, I need to explain more. The hole is in the leading edge of the lower unit so it catches the force of the water head-on. It's about pencil lead
size. I don't use mine because if I hit some mud
or get into thick weeds it can get clogged easily.
I prefer to use the plastic pick-up tube type found on most boats. Their easy to install and cost about $7.00. Two or three screws dipped in a good sealer, plug in your tube from your speedo and your ready to rock.. ;) :D :D
