Ok, here's the scenario.
I have a 1996 Jeep with the idiot lights in the dashboard.
I just got a replacement for it that has all gauges, speedometer, tripmeter, rpm, oil, water volt etc.

My question is, how do I set the speedometer to match my existing one?

I would like to keep the same mileage as to keep up with the record keeping on it, ie: oil changes, brakes etc.

Re: Speedometer question

You may be able to have a Speedo shop do it for you OR it is more common to get a certification sticker that shows the mileage at the time of the change over. I'm not sure who would supply that but you could call the dealer or your state licensing department.

Re: Speedometer question

Thanks guys. I don't intend on selling it anyway, just wanted to keep the right mileage on it for reasons stated.

Hook the speedo cable up to a drill. Keep checking on it. Don't go over!!!

You see, this is a electronic one and it don't work that way.

Re: Speedometer question

Hey Lester, If you want to e-mail me and I'll give you my address and you can ship it to me and I'll set it with the correct mileage and send it back to you. It's what I do for a living.

Is it a direct replacement, ie the switches on the back are the same for your jeeps pulses per mile?

Or if you have a friend with a 12V power supply and a signal generator you can "burn it in" yourself. 133.3Hz on the signal wire (and 12V and grd) should drive the speedo to 60 mph and then just calculate the amount of time it has to be left running (60 miles on the odo for every hour connected).

Watch what you do. My Astro has the electronic read out and if you tamper with it can forever be stuck at 999,999. A tell tale sign that someone jacked with odometer

Re: Speedometer question

Thanks cajun555, let me be clear, it is not a electronic digital read out, it is just an electronic cluster instead of all the mechanical cables etc.

BTW, I got her changed to the right mileage.
Thanks all for the replies.
