speedometer stopped working

I recently purchased a used Bayliner and one thing that does not work is the speedometer. I noticed this wire and bracket in the back of the boat that appears something should be here which might be why the speedometer does now work. Can someone tell me what this is?

That looks like the depth finder bracket. But before we can help with the speedometer we would have to know more about your boat. Inboard outboard?

Sorry.. I have a 92 Bayliner Classic 2252 in/out board. It has a Merc 4.3 L V6. There is a depth onboard which does not work either, its a IMPULSE QT-204. Now that you mention the depth finder
that might be what that wire is for which brings up the question if where is the speedometer cable located ?

If your drive is the Alpha Gen II, then your speedo pickup is on the leading edge of your outdrive. Look at yours and see if you have a small hole at letter "a" in this picture.

If you find this hole, then take a drill bit slightly smaller and turn it into the hole BY HAND. This hole gets blocked all of the time....

If that doesn't work, we can guide you from there.

Happy boating!

That black tube/cable hanging down is the key. Look at the end of it. If you see wires inside, that "cable" is the transducer cable that would have been attached to the transducer that is clearly missing from the bracket. That would also be why the depth gauge doesn't work. If that black cable is hollow (a plastic tube), that explains why the speedometer doesn't work. That tube connects to the PITOT on the outdrive.

Looks like the wire and bracket could be from a paddlewheel speed indicator.
