When I bought my boat the speedo didnt work.. I have one in dash where do i begin to see how to fix it? Isnt there spouse to be a roller thing on back of boat in water??
There are two types of speedometers. 1) pitot operated which is nothing more than a tube connected to either the pitot on the lower unit of the engine or to a separate plastic pitot mounted on the back of the boat. Water pressure compresses air in the tube which makes the needle move. 2) The speedometer may be electric in which case it will have a paddle wheel style of sender on the back of the boat. You more than likely have the pitot style and the very small hole in the leading edge of the pitot is probably plugged with debris which is quite common. Clean it out and the speedo should work again.
hmmmmm.. so i dont have neither.. nothing is running from center of speedo... no pitot or wheel on rear of boat... so where can i get one of these things??
Ok thanks.. And I lied.. there is a tube coming from speedo and going into a 45 plastic piece on foot.. pulled it iff both ends you can blow thru it.. put speedo end back on and blew and can move speedo to like 5mph.. ok plugged it basck into foot and blew from speedo part and cant its like it is clogged...???? So.. what should i do...
IMO, pitot tube speedos are completely useless. I wouldn't spend a nickel fixing it.
I have a Lowrance depth finder with a paddle wheel speedo on it. Checked with GPS and it's within 1 to 1.5 mph, sometimes closer. Dash speedo (pitot) is 6 to 10 mph off.
