Spider Control

What does everyone use to help with spider control that is safe and does not cause and damage or discoloration? They are constantly in and around the canvas especially when we break it down, they hang out underneath the rub rail and around the anchor. Seems every time we anchor out, I go through cleaning them out only to have them come back when we go back to the slip. We will be getting a kayak at some point and I know when I store that on the bow it will be like Tom Bodett and "we'll leave the light on for you"!

I thought I remember seeing something on Ship Shape TV once and they sprayed down a skiff and dock or something but can't seem to find it. Don't know if it really works anyway.

Thanks for the assistance.

I have used Spider Away, but have not used it on canvas. I do not have enough with/without experience with it, so I can't say how effective it is. A guy at my marina sprays it along his dock - again, I can't vouch for its effectiveness

Basically you have to coat everything on the boat and surrounding area to keep spiders at bay. That said, just think if everyone sprayed everything on every boat, in every area, this would take many gallons of spray, and would need to reapply every time it washed off. All the chemicals going right into the water, guess that's why COE and EPA does not allow it at a dock. Next to no one cares, I see pest control at the dock several times a year.

I use my hand and fingers, wipe the webs away and squish the spiders as I see them.

Most insecticides will wreck eisenglass windows. The only good solution I have found is to keep getting rid of the spiders as they reappear. I try to think that they are getting rid of mosquitoes and black flies but my wife and daughters hate them with a passion so I get to wipe the spiders out regularly. They are not tough bugs and most insecticides kill them. I use SpiderBan product when necessary. Just remember it's a neurotoxin so pay attention to where you put it.

Many years back we kept our boats in a boat lift and had the same spider issues. Back then the Shell oil co had a product for flies that you hung up and spiders and bugs stayed away. They were called "no pest strips" but I haven't seen them for quite a few years but then again I haven't looked for them either. Yes they did work!!

Most of my boating friends use Home Defense. They spray the docks and their lines running from the dock to the boat. Most of them say they do not have any spider problems.

Thanks everyone. I looked up the Spider Away by Star Bright and reviews are all over the board. Out of 95 reviews, 60% give it 4-5 stars and 35% give it 1-2 stars. Some say it smells horrible some say it smells great. I guess the only way to know is to get some and use it myself. I'm thinking to spray around the rub rail, anchor and around my slip and see what that does.

I haven't used it on a boat but we use Permethrin 38 around the outside of our home. You can find it on Amazon or at your local Co-op. It's the only thing we found that worked but its labeled for outdoor use only.
