I am trying to do some removations on my boat. It is an 1981 16ft blue fin and have not been able to fing info on this spacific boat. I am wondering if splash wells have structural support to them. I would love to remove it completely but I dont want to weaken anything. Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

Re: splash well

Pictures would really help. It depends on how low the stern sits in the water. I wouldn't remove it if you,at any time, get water coming in over the back. Are far as structural support, anything you remove will somewhat lessen that support. But again it depends on the design of the boat, etc.

Here are some pictures. If you need somemore I can get them. Water over the back is not a huge concern as long as I dont weaken the structure.

Re: splash well

I can understand why you might want to remove it. The splashwells on many of the older boats (mine included) sure do take up a lot of room. I wouldn't remove it entirely though. What if you could refabricate something lower and smaller like the new boats have? Nice Blue Fin by the way.

Re: splash well

I'd keep it but strip the carpeting. The original designers had to have a good reason/s for making it the way it is and you don't want to void the warranty! :)

Re: splash well

Thanks for all the input. You guy always have a ton of info. ezmobee that would probably work for what I want to do. The well I have now just takes up so much space that I can use for other things.

Thanks again

Re: splash well

that splash well is just like my 21 ft cc starcraft and i do believe it is structural. not saying something can't be done. the striaght piece going port to star diff. offers structure. the pic ez showed uses the deck and other pcs for structure. i have often thought about just moving the pc. back and cutting the angles to back it just big enough for the batteries, but not sure if it would be worth it

Re: splash well

Just wondering what you finally decided on. I have an 80's Sylvan with the same splashwell and just ripped it out. Hope it wasn't a bad idea. Honestly though it didn't seem to offer a ton of support to the transom. I'm making a back deck similar to that in EZombies pic. I also replaced the transom with 2 pieces of 3/4 BC plywood and added 1/8 sheets of aluminum to the inside and outside. I also changed the shape of the transom so that it was about 5 inches taller then sloped down to the motor to try keeping some water out.
