Hi all

I have long used this site for research and now have a question of my own!

I am rebuilding my shetland 460 which suffered from waterlogged foam thanks to several areas of water ingress.

I have cut out the old deck and foam and have laid a new 18mm deck and am foaming underneath.

This is all going very well.

However I have removed the splashwell, just to help with laying the new deck.

the old one was rivited to the transom/boat and I still have it but was a little deeper than I would like. I can refit if needed but would rather make a change and fit a new style.

It is around 2 feet deep and as you can expect I do not have a picture, however it is all glass and has a lip to rivet it where needed.

I would like to modify this splashwell/create a new one with decent ply but wonder how much structural worth it has?

I could replace with a new unit made of ply and shaped (and glassed) or cut the old unit.

The depth does not concern me but it has an annoying trait of leaving the areas I would use to store fuel in other boats as useless, I could probably just fit a phone directory in each side hence my urge to modify.

Anyone have any experience of these boats, or splashwell mods? I am planning on puttying (peanut butter) in my new splashwell so that should add some strength but dont want my transom to fall off!

This will probably run an 85hp motor and on a boat this size the transom will be subject to some abuse!

Mark

ps: this is my first major project so any help appreciated :)
