I just replaced the water pump on my 50hp, 4cyl., Mariner vintage '84. Something is miss aliened and I can't get the LU to assemble with the upper. I finally got it to assemble by rotating the drive shaft backward, now I have it assembled, but have no forward gear engagement.

Can some one walk me through how to realign the splines to reassemble the LU and upper so they work?

Thanks,

Re: Spline alinement drive and shift shafts.

If it is an 1984, that should be a later model, therefore the boat and the LU must both be in neutral before installing the LU. Drop the LU again and using a pair of pliers on the shift shaft, set the shaft to the neutral position. In Neutral the prop will spin freely in either direction. Set the boat to neutral and install the LU.

Here is a link to the condensed version of the service manual. Let the page load for several seconds and then, download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived:

What is the s/n of your engine?

Re: Spline alinement drive and shift shafts.

Thanks Gerry,
Also, thanks for the website link. The serial number of my mariner is #6542409.

It's an oldie, but runs good. I've had some issues that I was able to fix myself. I replace the water pump every two years and have rebuilt the carbs, LU seals, and replaced the stator. Two cylinders are 5 pounds down and will need attention at some point. Ethanol fuel gave me a headache a couple of years ago, but a carb rebuild and new hoses and filters seemed to fix it.

Thanks Gerry.
I read it as 50hp 6542048 - A160939 1984 4 cyl., per your link, that's why I assumed 1984?

Yes, you are quite right, that's why I always try to post where I got it from. Obviously getting too old for this crap.
