I just replaced the impeller on my 1989 85 hp Force. When I took it apart I had to remove the seal and metal collar at the top of the drive shaft. I took it apart a month and a half ago now I cannot remember the order or direction of the parts. The diagram in my manual is not too clear. the rubber seal comes to a point does that face up into the crank? Does the metal cup go on first and in which direction?

The metal cup/collar first with the angled part faced up against the spline.
Then the rubber boot with the angled edge down in to the cup/collar.

Before you slide the boot to the drive shaft put some water proofed marine grease at the spline.
No grease on the top of the drive shaft, it can act as seal and create an "hydralic effect" so the spline would not go the whole way in to the crankshaft.

The metal ring goes on so the open part is up.
The rubber has a kinda lip one end. That goes against the ring.
It kinda makes a pocket/seal when it hits the end of the crank for grease.
Nordin says no grease on the end, if it gets too much grease it can actually
keep the drive from going all the way up into the end of the crank.

Thanks. I really appreciate that. now I can get my lower unit back together and get back to doing the power swap from 40 to 85 hp on my pontoon.
