Splitting shift lever

Didn't read far enough in the manual where it says apply heat to soften the thread lock on the screw that secures the shift lever. Broke half of the screw off. A few of you said that you split the lever to remove it in a case like this.What tool do you use and do you split it just beside the screw hole? thank you-B

Just hit it with a sharp cold chisel where the screw broke off. It should break off pretty easily. Might drill another hole if necessary - just don't go so deep that you mess up the shift shaft itself.
