Splitting the engines and motors forums - 1 week test

Last Friday we split up the engines and motors forum into three distinct sections:

Non-Repair Engine Topics and Questions
Find out the year or value of your motor, proper oil/gas ratios, prop selection, basic maintenance and care tips and questions, etc.

Outboard Engine Troubles
Discuss technical questions/problems for outboards and get fix-it ideas/tips, etc.

I/O and Inboard Engine Troubles
Discuss technical questions/problems for inboards and I/Os and get fix-it ideas/tips. etc.

This split only slightly reduces the amount of posts for the outboard troubles area but it is a start. We would like to test this split for the next week and see what you all think. Please try this new format for a few days before making up your mind. I will be closing threads and moving them to the right location if they are posted in the wrong spot to try to help you all get a good feel for traffic on each new section. Again, if you all hate it, we can put things back together in a week.

I didn't have any problem with the way it was. I gained quite a bit of knowlege just clipping through the posts. I'd usually respond to outboard specific stuff but was gaining a bunch of smarts with the I/O stuff coming through.

I kinda like it this way (once I found it). The threads don't get buried as quick if you are looking to follow up on something specific.

If you move again, leave some bread crumbs or a trail of oil or something! Lol!

Either way works. Other boards would love to have too much traffic. Good job!

Hi, Admin5.

This is working very well for me for the same reasons DHadley mentions.

It takes me less time to find the threads I want to follow up on, and there are fewer "mystery" threads that you have to read before you have a clue what its about.

I like it, so far. :)

My first impression is the continuity is not as good. I still think that people will gravitate to where the action is, possibly the slower threads will make people feel left out and frustrated.

Its just my first impression though, maybe this will be ok? One way to solve this problem would be to let contributors form a "watch list" of the threads that they would like to follow, then everybody could keep thier sanity! and we could all post in the "Big Communtiy". How about a little warning next time before changes are made?

I heard about a distribution list that told some members of the change. Did I miss something because of the way I filled out my registration? Let me know, as I dont want to feel left out. Thanks Admin5 for a the great effort, you do your job very well! Mike

Fortunately, I have a mind like a steel trap and figured out the change in only three days. Thanks for the notice.
I think you're on the right track IF the posters will just post where they're suppose ta. JB must be about wore out trying to direct traffic. Lets give it a try an' see how it works.

Keep those chips flyin' evin.

c/6

Hooty

You will always have 'THE' forum...where all the traffic is or wants to be.....you have to decide the value of the 'satelite'[sp?] forums revolving around the big one...do they accentuate the clarity of the site or cloud it? personally, I am not sure yet...change comes harder when you are happy with the status quo...

Admin5,

I like it too. Folks are starting to figure it out.

One suggestion-people are are starting to want to post photos. A picture is worth a thousand words. Anyway, can you put a spot on the board to make it easier for people to understand HOW to do that.

OOPS! I see a (minor) problem. Some people are posting questions on both deals. Then as we try to help its hard to follow both.

Hummmm...Maybe folks are afraid we (as individuals) are only watching/answering one site and not the rest. They may have a point......?

I see many of the regulars not answering the same type of questions anymore or at least not as quick. It seems like they go to their specialty section and stay there.
Admin 5, you mentioned moving threads into correct area. Good idea. Maybe an auto-generated email to the starter would be in order so that may find it??
I do like the layout. More organized but it would have been nice to know about the change ahead of time.

Full speed ahead Admin5,
thus far I find it much easier to move around and those posts I have participated in are easier to follow up later. Great!!!
Ross.

Re: Splitting the engines and motors forums - 1 week test

Admin5; Like anything else it takes a day or two to get used to but I think this is going to work better. A lot of posts only want to know fuel ratio's, age of motor, etc. And you wont hear from them again until they have a problem of their own.

For what it's worth, I vote for the change. Makes finding old threads faster. Happy Boating, Hal

I like the new format, but don't segregate further ("25 hp & under 4-stroke outboard carb questions here"). I have OBs, but for my learning pleasure, cruise the other areas sometimes as well.
There must be a way to direct newbies to "Search." How many threads about which OB oil is best can there be??? ;)

I like the new way, again as said before, once you find it and get used to it. What would be REALLY NICE :) is email notification for replys - would save lots of time. PLEEEEEEASE????? Great board though! Heinz
