The Alpha Shift Control Cable (upper) adjustment procedure calls for a 4 turn back off from the full forward gear position (light pressure/no cutout movement). Is this adjustment to provide the working/running clearance between the shift dog and the spool? If true, is the reason efforts are not made to set the same clearance in reverse, because the time and loads are less. This would be the stud adjustment on the engine shift lever. If this clearance was set (how, I don't know) would reverse shift into and out of better? I have read the instructions in Service Manual 6 for the reverse stud adjustment which seems close but not precise. Thanks

Thanks, The very best video I've seen for this adjustment. The correct adjustment for forward gear is backing off 4 turns (guess yield at spool through linkage .025 - .040). So is the correct back off from reverse (same undercut clutch at total mesh) also equal to the same distance of 4 turns (at the upper cable) set by the stud?

Engagement of reverse is set by the stud. If it doesn't engage properly with the stud in the lowest position, move it up until it does. That should be the LAST adjustment. Do everything else first, and once they are done, DO NOT move them again.
