Have a 1994 Sport Jet Oil Injected. I know the original electrical systems are bad. Red stator is the common answer to fix problems. Should I dump the 600 + $$$ and convert to the CDM Kit.

Balancing cost againt reliability, what should I do?

Also, do you need a lifting hook to pull engine or does a stragically placed chain work?

Thanks
Tom

If you run the red stator, I think you will be fine. If ya worry alot, buy a new stator and ignition box. You can get both for around 150 each at http://www.seilermarine.com/rapair/mercury.htm

Keep them in the boat as spares.

I am not familiar with the "CDM Kit", you have any more info.

My buddy says he just lifts his Sport Jet 90 out with his hands, but kinda hard on the back.

Ken

Re: Sport Jet 1994 Ignition CDM Kit or Not

I saw this ona recent post here

Mercury knew there was a problem with the electrical system on the 1993 and 1994 90HP Sportjets. They made a CDM conversion kit that updated the electrics for those models in 1996,you should inquire if a kit is available to upgrade an 89 90hp.

The Mercury part number is 835084A1 CDM CONV KIT-90J -List price $725.55 but can be found for $616.19 on the net

The kit updates and replaces the entire electrical system and eliminates the problematic switchbox. The kit includes a new flywheel, red stator and trigger, voltage regulator, rev limiter, 3 coils and wires, wiring harness and more! You remove the old and the new bolts right on. The hardest part is pulling the flywheel. The new coils and voltage reg. eliminates the switchbox all together! It also boosts the output amperage so your battery charges better.

The above info was posted by SeaRayder on another board.

That is an entire new ignition system, and not at all needed. To upgrade from black stator to red stator, all you need is the red stator, and red stator adapter. I think total cost is under 200 bucks.

OR

You can buy the black stator from Rapair. It is SUPPOSED to be much better than the original black stator.

What stator do you have on the engine now?

Ken

Ken, we use Rapair/CDI stator all the time as Mercury replacement and have never had a problem. Their stators are not potted and cool much better than factory stators, we never had stator problems with Mercury till someone decided to pot them---Bob

Re: Sport Jet 1994 Ignition CDM Kit or Not

I've got the standard CDI system on my 90 and the CDM system on my 120. Both with red stator. Got a complete CDM upstairs for the 90 from a blown engine of a customer's. Been seeing quite a bit of problems with the magnets coming loose on the flywheels this year. Had three come in the past month. One broke the arm off the timer base and ate the stator up. Wasn't a pretty sight. Doesn't hurt to feel under the edge of the flywheel ever so often and see if you can move the magnets with your fingers. Now I haven't checked to see what the difference is but the CDM system flywheel has a bigger hole for the crankshaft. So this would mean that the crankshafts are different between the two systems but don't know if the standard flywheel wouldn't work also with the CDM system.

Can I assumes CDI stands for Capacitive Discharge Ignition?

What does CDM stand for?

Thats good news on the black Rapair stators. I have a Rapair ignition box on mine and it has been trouble free.

Ken

I believe it stands for module. Being it takes the place of the CDI unit and in reality you have each cylinder with its on CDI unit.
