I just finished putting my 95 sport jet 90 back together and im going through the manual for adjusting the carbs and the oil pump and its not making any sense. It seems like the manual only covers minor adjustment and leaves you to figure out how to make large adjustments if you disassembled things.

is there a clear procedure elsewhere on this?

Is this an outboard motor or something different?
Don't know what a sport jet is!

Re: Sport Jet 90 carb/oil pump linkage adjustments

A Sport Jet 90 is essentially a 90 hp Force/MercuryMariner outboard moved inboard on the Bayliner Jazz and Reflexx Jet boats from the mid 1990s. So while its techinically an inboard motor, its still an outboard motor in basic design.

I'll be working on it again this weekend, so any insight on the linkage adjustments would be great. The manual seems to leave gaps in the information.

So it's an L-Drive?
Got any pictures?

Re: Sport Jet 90 carb/oil pump linkage adjustments

Well, as I am new to boating, I am not sure of what an L-Drive is, but I am assuming the crank is vertical while the drive is horizontal right? Thats essentially what this motor is, except instead of a prop its got a jetdrive.

Here are a few pictures, one of the entire motor after I pulled it back out this morning and 2 closeups. the 1st closeup is the linkage at idle. That appears to be fine and yes I know about the ziptie on the throttle linkage, I am getting a new one, it broke this morning (ARGH!). Anyways, the linkage appears to be right for idle as I am able to line it up with the roller just touching.

The 3rd picture is the problem. I can not get the linkage to move far enough to put the carbs in full throttle. I'm completely stumped. The tower shaft is hitting its max stop and its not adjustable, its just a plastic bumper on the opposite side of the same arm that the idle adjustment screw is on. Which I also adjusted to the manual specs of 1/8" when adjusting the ignition timing.

So do you see my problem? I cant for the life of me, figure out whats incorrect here, unless there is an incorrect part installed in the linkage?

Hence I am pulling my hair out :)

Thanks!

Re: Sport Jet 90 carb/oil pump linkage adjustments

You need a good manual really to do the adjustment your looking for. Or use the search feature at the top of the page and type in (Force linkage adjustments).
Look in the carburetor's with the throttle wide open, you can open the throttle useing the cam plate that sits against the cam roller (black plastic roller).
The three throttle plates in the back of the carbs should be level at wide open throttle, same as the three choke plates on the front of the carbs. If your not getting wide open throttle this way sounds like the adjusting rod with the two snap on ends is adjusted to far out and you need to adjust the cam roller itself so you will have adjustment left in the snap on rod ends.
You can adjust the cam roller with a flat screwdriver and small wrench. It will move quite a bit as far as adjustment is concerned.
I'd try to explain it futher but like I say you really need a manual. There's a few ateps to getting it all done correctly that need to be follwed.
Took me all summer to get my cam roller lined up with the cam correctly just right, then one day messed with it a little while and it all lined right up! Good luck!

Re: Sport Jet 90 carb/oil pump linkage adjustments

THANK YOU!!!! :)

While your post specifically didnt help out, while I was reading it and thinking about the problem, I decided to adjust the wide open throttle 1st and then come back to adjust idle correctly. When I did this, idle was way out, as expected. I was about to adjust it way out of spec from the manual (I do have the Mercury Marine service manual for this motor) when I had a flash of intuition....

what if the idle SS was the wrong length!!!!

So i spent 15 minutes roaming the web, came up with this link

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...0,200,230,160,120,130,150,50,180,40,30,220,90

and it clearly shows 1/4x20 x 1.375 long bolt. My bolt is well over that in length, more like 1.675. So its off to lowes to find a bolt of the correct length!! :) :) :)

Thanks!

Good luck anyway! Sorry I couldn't be more help.
If I were standing there I could adjust it.
It's kind of hard to explain and also it has to be adjusted in the right order.
My Clymer manual takes you through step by step but it's still a little confusing for me.

Re: Sport Jet 90 carb/oil pump linkage adjustments

Yea well, my elation is very short lived. I was able to get the throttle adjustmets correct, then when i hooked up the oil pump linkage and adjusted it to WOT, when returning to idle, the oil pump is preventing the throttle tower from returning to full idle.

I am ready to sink this thing and make it a reef....
