Sport Jet 90 impeller

I have a 1994 sea ray sea rayder with a mercury sport jet 90 engine. I need to replace the impeller and the gasket around the intake grate. Does anyone know if the impeller can be accessed by removing the grate or do you need to pull off the jet outdrive unit? Do I need any special tools to do this job?

I was going to do this job on a Yamaha jet ski I used to own, but after I got the shop manual, I discovered the grate was glued to the bottom of the hull. I decided to purchase the SS impeller on my own and have the Yamaha shop put it in----there are tools required to get the proper spacing between the impeller and pump housing it sits in.<br /><br />Best $50 I spent on that machine was having the shop install the impeller.
