So it all started with a debate with the wife after seeing a boat converted from traditional seating to sport style seating with a sun deck. I think that the sundeck takes so much space away from the deck of the boat and is some ploy by boat makers to force buyers into larger boats. She says it must really be nice to lounge on the back and not have to deal with as much engine noise when sitting in the back. I've never had a boat with a sundeck, nor have I ever seen someone outside of a boatbuilder's website actually sunning themself on a sundeck (usually nice pictures though). What does everyone think?

Re: Sport Seating

I am guessing you are talking about my thread with the seat change at 17 ft it did take a lot of space. I am new to boating and at this point don't see any reason to need a lot of open floor space it still seats the same number of people but I am still a rookie i may regret it after i get on the lake. I backed the seat up as close as i could to the engine as well. You may be right about the ploy by boat makers to push you to a bigger boat. I will get back to you on how much it is used in the next month or two. I will be interesting to see what others have to say

Re: Sport Seating

My Stingray had the single drivers chair and back to back seat on the left. Typical doghouse and seats around. Our Glastron has sport seating. We like the sport seating better... the boat actually feels like there is more room inside. Kids like crawling around sunpad. If i was to do it again, i would go with a walkthru transom... or an area that you can walk on. The sunpad and bench seat sure takes some abuse from getting in and out.

You caught me Scott! Considering she likes it, who knows, I may end up asking advise on your conversion one day.....I don't have the best track record when it comes to her and I not seeing eye to eye. Is it more difficult to get to the engine?

My conventional seating converts to a small sundeck - Bayliner 195 like the video. The thing I don't like about the "sport seating" is how you loose a seat and all of the storage under the back seats. (cooler and life jackets in my case)

If you like to lounge on the hook or beached, the sundeck is cool and will be well used ;) They come with lots of stowage too

And you can flip the seats upside down to become steps to the swim platform without having to step on the vinyl of the cushions.
Bayliner really though this one through. :D
