Never ending...

Last week the SJ90 wouldn't start after sitting on a beach fishing for an hour, and looking under the hood noticed fuel pouring out the sound atenuator. Thank goodness for a trolling motor!

Took the carbs off (based on other posts) and found the reddish 'sludge' in the vent lines, cleaned them out so they can be blown thru/sucked thru without restriction, found a small flake in the 2nd carb float/needle seat, and made sure all 3 floats were in tact and float after soaking. Turned carbs upside down and blew in fuel inlet and verified not able to blow through. Put everything back together and adjusted the synch bar so the butterfly was closed at nuetral and evenly flat at full throttle. Good news was that she fired right away (in the water) but died after 20 seconds of running...no gas pouring out the carbs (atenuator still off). Won't start again. Tested for spark...spark on all 3 cylinders.

Now I notice that cranking is slowing down quickly so I put the charger on overnight, dropped it in the water the next morning, and it tried to fire but wouldn't start, then seemed to not even try to fire. Each time trying to crank, cranking slowed down...seemed like battery going dead.

Today, purchased new battery, made sure it tested good (900+ cranking amps and 12.7 Volts), took it to the water and it cranked good for a few attempts, but then started slowing down with each subsequent crank until it wouldn't hardly turn...very slowly when it did. Ugh! Pulled all 3 plugs and verified cylinders didn't have any water in them (hydrolock), then to the parts store for some more testing.

Testing included all 3 plugs getting spark, the part store tester saying the starter was good (drawing 160 amps), 12.67 volts at the battery at rest, 12.0 volts at the battery while cranking (cranked fast out of the water). Checked voltage at starter while cranking...11.8 volts. Still cranking fast. Replaced positive cable with a heavier and shorter cable just to be sure and checked ground and all connections around batter/starter/solenoid.

Took back to the boat ramp and tried to start and it seemed to only crank a couple of times at fast speed then quickly reduced crank speed til barely spinning/not spinning. Frustrated and headed back home...pulled 3 plugs, all 3 fuel-wet but look ok. Suggestions? What do I check now? Starter starting to die is the only thing I can think of....positive/negative wires didn't feel warm after cranking either...B.O.A.T = <B>reak <O>ut <A>nother <T>housand-- lol!

My vote would be the starter or the starter drive , if the starter sounds normal and it is not spinning the motor , the rubber insert in the drive has broken .

Interesting....pulled it 5 hours to a lake knowing it wasn't running...put it in the water and cranked...slower, slower alllllllmmmmmoooooosssssstttttt dead....then....fast crank! WTH? Tried again and very slow...then fast crank and a hint of running!! A couple more times of trying to crank, each one slow-cranking less before going to fast crank and she started!

Noticed when I pulled it out of the lake that evening there appeared to be water sprayed around in the engine compartment, so next morning she cranked fine and started, checked for spraying water...nada.

Afternoon decided to check under the hood and noticed more sprayed water...so had someone else drive at full throttle and pulled the engine hatch and the exhaust manifold/gasket was spraying a stream of water right on the starter!

Stopped, pulled some 2 stroke oil out and proceeded to pull the starter gear up to engage the crank (yes, engine off) and lubed up the shaft with 2 stroke oil. Ran great for the 3 day weekend!

Now I'm off to the stealer...I mean dealer to get an exhaust gasket.

Time to put that one in my files , I have never heard of this result but the manifold gasket is common .

Pulled the manifold...sure enough, a small rock at one of the passages (about where the water was spraying from. Only thing is the manifold gasket was still in tact... Hoping the manifold didn't get hot where the rock is and warp! New gasket in place but still need to torque the bolts down, we'll have to see if this fixes it.

I don't think the water spraying on the starter necessarily caused the problem directly as it didn't spray at idle/low rpm's...my guess is the spray may have caused corrosion/rust on the starter/shaft/brushes over time making for bad connections/drag on the starter...but that's just a guess at this point.

Replaced exhaust manifold gasket and headed to the river after work yesterday...cranked great...and cranked...and cranked! Checked spark...good, but noticted after cranking so much I didn't smell any fuel. Pulled the fuel line off the carbs and through it in a coffee can I had with me and nothing for a couple of cranks then just a spurt. Time to rebuild the fuel pump.

I should start keeping score: Sportjet 10, Brian 3!!

Re: SportJet 90 Slow Cranking in water

Haven't checked the volts/amps, but have taken it to the water 3 times in the last 3 days and it seems to be cranking fine (won't start, but I started an new thread for the fuel pump). I'd like to get it running and make sure the exhaust gasket is holding well.
