I am replacing the drivers lounge seat with a pedestal seat, so before I begin that process I decided to address the soft deck area around the port side of the ski locker. I've sliced and peeled the carpet back and ripped up some of the waterlogged decking. I am pleased to find the stringer and foam solid and firm, although there is about an inch of brackish water down in there. The wet decking is not too extensive in area and I'd prefer to cut-and-fill with 3/4 fir 1SG, epoxy barrier and fiberglass top, roll the carpet back and screw the port lounge back in place.

So far I see no evidence as to how the decking has been attached to the stringers. Would I be correct in simply screwing it down into the stringer(s), perhaps taking the precaution of pre-filling the pilot holes with epoxy?

Secondarily: Is there any special trick to cutting out the section of decking? So far I am trying the skil saw, but it isn't happy when it hits the good fiberglass . . . I am not particularly carpentry-skilled, but I do try from time to time. :)

You have removed some of the decking already and haven't found any fasteners?

youhave to set the depth of the skill saw blade to the same depth as the deck.....then you can cut with no worries.

the deck is screwed or glued to tbe stringers.....

do a core sample of the foam....the water will be at the bottom of the foam....the top will look fine take a pvc pipe....cut two teeth in it and go thru the foam to the bottom of the hull....then pull the core....you will see it its wet.

You may want to consider doing more than just a spot repair, unless you just like opening it up every couple of years.

You may be right . . . it probably won't be that much more work to strip the port side back to the ransom at least to 8 feet. Perhaps I can enlist some assistance from a "handier" pal, or even the paid help of a carpenter.
