Spray New Hubs With Cold Galvanizing?

I have a new set of TieDown EZ lube hubs. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to spray the outside surfaces with cold galvanizing compound to prevent rust. This will be primarily a saltwater rig. Pros..Cons..Any advice will be appreciated!

Not a bad idea but I would be suspect of getting a true wheel lug torque on a painted surface.

The key to keeping things alive in salt conditions is: rinsing. Plus, remove the wheels at least twice a year to make sure they don't corrode themselves on.

Thanks, Fleetwin. Would it be acceptable to masking tape the lugs and lightly grease them later? That way I could still spray the face and rear surface of the hubs. I try to rinse when I launch if the ramp isn't a zoo and always after I reload. The previous owner had bearing buddies and never serviced the bearings. He had completely filled the void with grease and blown out both inner seals but the seal housings were so corroded to the hubs that they could not be removed...hence the replacement.

Here's a neat masking tip for masking wheels that I picked up from Velocity Channel's Wheeler Dealers. You get an old sheet and cover the wheel. Then move round the wheel with a screwdriver and push the sheet tightly into the space between tire and rim. Whe you have done that, simply run a sharp blade round it and that will cut out the center. The rim can then be painted. You simply pull off the sheet (now a masking template) and put it on the next rim. Completely reusable and definitely faster than using paper & masking tape.

Ayuh,.... You can do that, but be forewarned, yer lugs are gonna Loosen for a couple hundred miles, as the coatin' is displaced at the contact points,...

google up a product called Fluid Film for protectin' steel from salt,....

Good point! I always check tire pressure and torque the nuts before every trip...will bring the torque wrench along in the future to monitor. Thanks for all the tips, guys!

Never ever ever EVER lubricate lug studs. Mask them off, use a thread cleaning set to clean the threads, all that fun stuff. But if you use any sort of lubricant on the studs clean it off before you install the wheel and the lugnuts.

Edit: the best thing I have found to prevent rust is a product called GalvaPrep. It coats the iron/steel in zinc (phosphate? I'm not sure, but it is inert) and prevents it from rusting. Dad coated a Coleman lantern in the stuff for grandpop and he used it for night fishing on the Banana River for 10+ years with no rust.
