Spraying fuel

I like to run all of the fuel out of my '64 Merc60 6hp when I am done running her. When I remove the fast connector on the hose from the motor fuel sprays out of the motor's receptacle in a thin stream. It sprays out about three feet for about three seconds and then dribbles out a few seconds more. Is this normal? I don't remember it doing this before. I just rebuilt the carb, fuel pump, replaced all of the fuel lines to the carb and fuel pump, and replaced the fuel bulb and line (used same old fast connector). Is my receptacle on the motor supposed to have a valve on it? Should I replace or is this caused by something else? The motor runs real good in a test tank but I am afraid that there could be problems when I get her out on the lake. Last time the motor ran great in a tank but died at WOT on the lake. I think that was due to a leak in fuel line (I hope). Also the plugs are always wet. I thought I had the carb tuned perfect. The plugs are CJ6 but the manual says CJ7. Could the float needle not be closing? Does this cause the motor to flood while running? Can a motor flood at WOT and die? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been reading the manual about 10 times and now I need some experienced help.

Re: Spraying fuel

lots o questions.... 1) there's a ball bearing in
the quick connect that prevents fuel from leaking
out (why run it out?) 2) to check float, squeeze
primer bulb and see if gas leaks out front of carbs.
if yes, floats stuck 3) faualty float can
cause it to die, so can a defective quick connect.
4) have you replaced fuel pump diaphrams/gaskets?
a cheap/easy maintainence item.
sometimes if you tap on the side of the bowl with
the but of a screwdriver it will unstick the float.
has worked for me on a few occasions ('70 1150)
