Well..... Im going to paint my 12ft aluminum jon boat this weekend, but I have never done it so I need lots of help and advice. I am using iterlux 2000E as the primer but how should I set the gun? Is it going to gum up the gun alot or will it spray like regular 1 part? Is there anything I should look out for or expect? I really don't know how do this, so all the help and advice anybody has would be great. By the way I am not expecting this to look like a professional done it, just want it to look half way decent. (you know not perfect just appealing) Thanks in advance

P.S. I am renting a sprayer for 10 dollars, instead of paying a professional 500 dollars to paint it for me.

Re: Sprayng 2 part epoxy???

Be very careful and research research research. I was going to spray on Interlux Perfection. I had all of the safety gear, but the people in the neighborhood didn't. Seriously this is some dangerous stuff.

I would roll on 3~6 coats and give it a good sanding afterwards with 180-220 grit paper

Re: Sprayng 2 part epoxy???

International & interlux do not recommend spraying by the home handyman, there are some seriously dangerous chemicals in 2 part epoxy paint. That being said, with the proper equipment it is safely doable. Spraying atomizes the paint, this causes a cloud that drifts in the breeze, anybody in the vicinity could be exposed to the cloud. If you cannot do the job in a safe environment for you and your neighbors then I would suggest roll and tip.

What type of gun are you hiring?

This handsome guy is wearing the absolute minimum gear for spraying epoxy, an air fed mask/helmet is preferable.

That 2000E paint is very thick!
You will need a gun with at least 2.5mm tip, a 3mm would be better.
I had to spray at 80PSI to get this stuff out of the gun. The instructions do not say to thin it so I didn't.
It will take several coats to build to the mil thickness they recomend. I bought 1 gal of this stuff for a 15ft boat and did not have enough to do the job correctly.
Good luck.

The thing to do that I would recommend is contact the tech department at interlux for their recommendations and follow it to a tee. Jot down who you talked to and feel free to bother them at any time with any question. Interlux is one of the top sellers so their customer service should be top notch.

If they won't help you then I would tell everyone in the universe.

That is a premium marine paint that commands a premium price.

Stay safe spraying this stuff like the other members have explained.

and of course

Enjoy

Yep nasty stuff. I wouldn't go near spraying it without my own remote air supply. Roll and tip it. Sometimes just rolling with the white foam rollers negates the need to tip. you will get great results if everything is prepped well.

Thanks guys I am now even more leary of spraying this primer.... call me stubborn but I really want to spray it. By the way "Thewoodcrafter" I did get the thinner for the primer, Interlux does have one for there primer. Seven Up thanks so much for that idea I honestly never thought of it. Im going to call them on monday and see what they say, they should have something right. I mean they are a paint company. Anyways, thanks all and I will repost and let everyone on here know what they say.

Thin up to 33%. Nozzle should be 1.5 or 1.8mm. Set the regulator between 50 and 70 psi. I find 60 psi perfect for my gun (set with trigger activated), actual reg setting will be around 65psi. Before mixing up the 2 part paint, you can play around with gun and reg setting with normal (cheap) water based paint (same consistency as thinned 2 part).

Dunaruna, thank you so much that is exactly the reply I was looking for. I only got one court do you think that will be enough to cover my boat its just a 12 ft flat bottom jon boat?

Re: Sprayng 2 part epoxy???

Clay i really do not mean to be mean spirited here, but you are not a professional painter.....if you were you would not be asking the questions you are... Plz do not be angry with me i had to make a point.

If indeed you were a pro painter would have already figured out the tip...pressure and thinner and have known the dangers of that paint from the msd...

If you simply just roll the stuff out it will cause you a 45min to a hour of more sanding time..that is the only diff.....But the huge diiffernece is you will not inhale the
ISOCYANATES
you have a life and 45 minutes means very little in the grand scheme of things... Sorry for the smart arse post..

ISOCYANATES
Isocyanates are highly reactive compounds that have a
variety of industrial applications, such as: polyurethane
foam manufacturing, elastomers, paints, adhesives,
coatings, varnishes and others. Some examples are:

TDI
? toluene diisocyanate
MDI

? methylene diphenyl diisocyanate
HDI

? hexamethylene diisocyanate
IPDI

? isophorone diisocyanate
NDI

? naphthalene diisocyanate
Isocyanates are severe irritants to the upper and lower
respiratory tract. Inhalation exposure may cause
coughs, sore throat, chest pain and/or shortness of
breath. Repeated exposure can cause a decline in lung
function even without showing any symptoms ? in some
people it can cause respiratory sensitization and this
can lead to asthmatic attacks.
Isocyanates are also skin and eye irritants ? repeated
skin exposure can cause skin rashes and sensitization;
and exposure to mist can result in damage to the cornea.

Re: Sprayng 2 part epoxy???

I agree wholeheartedly with tailgunners post.

Clay, even with the roll/tip method, proper safety gear is still required.
Please make an informed decision as to the method of application.

The following website has all the tech data in relation quantities and overcoat times, me thinks that a quart is nowhere near enough. It also explains the correct surface preparation procedure for aluminum and 2000e primer.

Re: Sprayng 2 part epoxy???

Ok guys thank you for your honesty. I guess the best thing to do is not to spray this stuff. With that being said what would be the best method for me to apply it (roll or brush) and what materials am I going to need. Tail gunner and Durana if you guys hadnt told me any of this I honestly would have sprayed it with out any safety gear out in the yard... But luckily I asked first, I want to put mine and everyone else's safety first. So tail gunner no need to be sorry....THANKS

Hi,

Did you happen to contact Interlux technical department ? At the least they'll have some tips for whatever method of application you'll be using. Sanding, time between coats, curing times.
