Spring helped, Fuel bulb ??74 Evinrude 115 Choke issue?

I have been working thru starting problems on my 115hp Evinrude all season and have one final issue that I am not sure about. On a cold start no matter how long I hold choke switch, Throttle lever raised gas is primed it takes forever. When I hit the choke switch the coil pulls in and butterflys both pull down. What I noticed was that they flutter while cranking. On two different occasions I have manually held the choke closed and motor seemed to start with only a few turns. As both times the manual hold on the choke was after an attempt to start using the switch not sure if was coinsidence. I want to try inital start tonight with using manual hold and see what happens. If it works I would like to install a heavier spring between the choke coil and the lever for the butterfly. Does this make any sense? Coil is pulling in and staying in with switch on flutter is in spring tension. Once engine starts runs like a bear all day.<br /><br />Thanks for any input in advance.

The butterflies are not closing completely. Simply move the choke solenoid away from the plunger slightly. The plunger is bottoming out in the solenoid. We want the butterflies to bottom out in the carbs before the plunger. <br /><br />Good luck!

Have already lowered solenoid, Spring itself seems really weak. Will change it out tonight.As long as butterflys are able to open completely when coil is disengaged I think should be OK? Thanks for the feedback.

Thats correct. <br /><br />Also look at where the air silencer base bolts to the carbs. If either (or both) of the gaskets are sticking up they may hold the butterflies open slightly. Also check the manual "on-auto-off" lever and make sure something isnt causing a slight hang up there. That lever should stay in the "Auto" position and allow free movement of the butterflies.<br /><br />Good luck!

It sounds like to Butterfly is working fine... you pointed out that you can manually hold them and it works fine.. It points to the electical side.. not keeping the solenoid energized with enough voltage to keep them valves pulled tight... Solenoid or voltage is my guess...

Solenoid seems to be ok as when the butterfly flutters coils stays full energised and holds tight, only slack is in the spring. Doesnt seem to have enough tension to hold tight down. I picked up a couple of different springs today and will experiment tonight. Thanks for the response.

Here’s a question for one of the pros on this site. Is it possible that the reeds aren’t closing and backpressure from the crank case is forcing them open momentarily?

if that is possible?? not sure that it is.. It would blow some gas out the front of the carb... or at least show signs of it looking wet.....

Spring replacement took care of the choke flutter. Installed and fired over much quicker than it had. Still takes a while but is better. I did notice that while pumping the bulb it would gain pressure and then with one squeeze release as if somthing was stuck. Is there a Diaphram prior to the carbs that may be messed up or would a sticking float do that. I just had the carbs rebuilt at about 12 hrs ago on the motor.
