I was given some trim tabs that are spring loaded. Alum and stainless about 4 x 8 inches. The spring tension seems to be maybe 20 to 30 lbs. (not adjustable)
Are these things worth a darn for a 20 ft. cuddy?

I have never used them, but was thinking about the nauticus smart tabs once. They had gas actuated tabs, for a 20' boat I think they recommended somthing like 180lbs of actuator pressure. Something like you describe would fit on a skiff. But I am no expert, just based on what I saw on the nauticus web page.

no, they would be too small and not enough spring tension.
if you want automatic tabs, you should get up with nautijohn. he can tell you what you'd need.
i talked to him and he says i would need 9"x8" tabs with 40lb actuators for my 14ft bayliner, i'm going to get a set.

Mr. Fitz;

The size of the plate and the amount of lift pressure should be in proportion to the boat size and weight to achieve good performance. For example a 12"x9" trim plate will work wonders on your boat but not even noticeable on the Queen Mary. You may feel some effect but far less than you need. One other thing, the set you are talking about was made by Olson Co. which is no longer in business. They made larger units as well. There are several problems with torsion or compression springs; one is that they react instantly to any change in water pressure, two they increase the resistance as the plate compresses the spring. This is exactly what you do not want. Once the boat is on plane the lift pressure should be reduced so that the bow is not pushed down. Bow down attitude causes bow steering, reduction in speed and economy, and poor handling. Twenty pounds of lift on your boat is not enough to improve performance or cause problems.
