after looking around here to find whats wrong with my 89 40hp evinrude it seemed that the clutch dogs were bad (seemed to be poping out of gear at higher speeds) so i took the lower unit to a shop to have looked at and he did a quick test of turning the drive shaft and putting a block of wood between the prop and the lower unit and the shaft spun while the prop was being held, he said that was prob what the problem was. we pulled the prop and you could see where it was spinning the metal is actully ground down on the prop. could this explain the clunking/poping out of gear? i think for as cheap as props are i should just try a new one (old ones bent a bit anyway)
whats anyone think?????

bent prop causes vibration, possibly beating up the splines. i would try a new prop. it that doesn't solve it, you will need a prop anyway.

A spun prop hub will usually act like this.....engine revs up but boat does not go any faster and you may notice engine vibrtion but not always. If you have gear and clutch dog issues you should be able to tell by draining the gear oil and looking for metal it may be small pieces or may just look like glitter in the oil.

ok just drained the oil and there were no chunks or anything, just a few shavings on the magnet on the end of the drain plug. im gonna throw a new prop on and see what happens. feel free to look at my post in the prop section to help me find the right one
