This is the strangest thing. Went out to the lake today for a few hours. Heading back to the launch I was traveling at WOT for a few minutes and when I throttled down I heard a loud pop. Obviously concerned I took it out of gear and let it idle so I could open the engine hatch to see what was going on. The engine was making such a racket I though I had threw a valve or rod or spun a bearing.
So I got it on the trailer and got home for a closer inspection. After a few minutes I discovered what had happend, the damn harmonic damper(balancer) was just "floating" on the end of the crank between the pulley and timing cover. Apparently when I throttled down the change in engine speed was enough to shear the key on the crank that holds it in place. Strange as I've never heard of this happening or had it happen to me. I'm actually pleased though the the engine is fine, I thought I'd be replacing it which would have not been good as it only has about 50hrs. on it!!
