I was out the other day and boat was struggling a little.I stopped to check and I had huge amount of vegatation wraped up around the prop and outdrive.I cleaned her off but it wasn't easy.It was wrapped up pretty tight. After I took off again The motor was wanting to rev out.I have read some posts that people mentioned a "spun prop" can anybody explain or help?THANKS

Re: spun prop

There is a pressed in rubber piece between the prop hub and the prop itself. This piece allows the shaft to spin independent of the prop if the prop is suddenly stopped by the river bottom, a rock, etc. Once the prop has slipped you'll need to get a new rubber piece installed because it will keep slipping.

Re: spun prop

If you want to check scripe some reference marks on the prop and the hub or use paint to mark it. Run it and after you fell the slip check the alignment of your marks. Prop repairs are not too bad.

Re: spun prop

Some outboards, usually smaller, have key pins or whatnot in them that act the same way.

I was in a bathtub race in 1982 around Bainbridge island and hit a patch of kelp and spun my prop, it's like a slipping clutch in a car, you make revs but don't seem to be moving....

Take the prop off and figure out if it is the rubber piece or a key pin, replace it, check everything and clean up the prop :)

Re: spun prop

Thanks for the quick replys.I forgot to mention my outdrive is a Volvo 270.I don't believe it has a clutch in the shaft.I'm kind of hoping it is the prop itself.Does anyone no for sure if my type is the kind that the prop will slip to save the outdrive?

Re: spun prop

I just got back from the boat.I took BOB's advice.I pulled the prop and scribed a line with a paint pen to see if the slipping was the prop. There was still some weeds wrapped up that came off along with prop.I put everything back together and off I went.I could not get the prop to slip at all.One time I had the engine REV OUT but I'm pretty sure it was from turning hard (cavitation)Just because I was already wet I went in again and took off the prop. The lines were still the same.Is it possible for the prop to slip because of weeds or something but not need fixed?I a little confused at all this.

Actually,........... Clearing the Prop is Extremely Easy................

When you get to "Clean" water,.........
Shift to Reverse,+ Accelerate,.. Hard,.. Just for a couple of Seconds,........

Shift back to forward, be on your way,........ No More Weeds.......... ;)

I'll echo TilliamWe,........
Any weeds will most surely cause the issue you Had..........

Re: spun prop

Thanks guys.I couldn't believe that I actually didn't have to sink any money into my float. It sure is nice!! Hey Bondo Thanks for the advice but I have faithfully done exactly what you wrote every time out since the begining of July.Thats when the weeds get so bad that the fish start WALKING to the bait!It is sooo bad right now that I have been going out about 100 yards cleaning out the strainer cup in the cooling system then running hard in reverse. Then I go another 100yards (where its finally about 6feet deep)and do it all over again.AND STILL LOOK WHATS HAPPENED!! :(
