Any vegetable growers on here?

We are trying our hand at vegetable gardening and planted some squash (amongst other things).

We picked some squash today.

If you can tell, did we pick them too early or too late? I think we bought two types of squash, one with a smooth skin and one with bumps.

Re: Squash question.

Fifth one in top row is about as big as they should get. 6-8 inches is all you want, over that they get to gourdlike, hard and tough, lose flavor also. Pan fry like HC said, slice them across or long ways like a perch. You can also saute them with onions to make a fine meal.

Re: Squash question.

Thanks for the information. I'll fry them up separately and see the difference in taste.

I thought I waited too long, but honestly, the folliage was so thick I didn't notice that they had grown so fast!

I'll report in after supper.

Re: Squash question.

You have just learned you first lesson in gardening. Don't plant squash unless you have a lot of friends. ;)

And yes I let them get that big, I wanted to see how big they would get. I believe that they weighed about 14 pounds each.

Wish I had that problem. Last year I was everybodies supply. Had about 5 different families ASKING for it. We barely had enough to eat every night supplying all those people. We will usually plant 6 straight necks, 6 crook necks, and 6 zukes. Makes lots, and we eat lots. We love tha stuff, never get tired of it.

Re: Squash question.

I like squash!

I fried some with a little vegetable oil and salt and pepper on Sunday night. They were good.

I grilled some tonight and they were fabulous! I got some of the large ones that should have been picked earlier and divided them into two parts length-wise. I put some butter in them and heavy salt and pepper. I grilled them first skin side down while the butter melted and soaked in the fruit. I then turned them over to put some grill marks on the inside. They were tender and flavorful.

I also got one and did basically the same thing but I put it in tin-foil. It got even more soft and was just as nice.

I'll try some additional recipes suggested on here in the future.
