squeaking noise

what could be making a squeaking noise with all belts removed? I've been trying to locate the source of a squeaking noise coming from the front of the engine (where all the belts are). The engine is a replacement engine, so, cannot track the exact model, but the original engine was 5.7GIPLKDCE, the replacement should be a close analog. I ended up removing all the belts, so, harmonic balancer is the only thing spinning (for very short period of time to avoid overheating) but the noise is still there. Any ideas?

Any of the pulley could be dry or noisy. Power steering pump too. Your water pump will be running dry too perhaps.

the fuel pump is brand new together with both fuel filters. besides, i can hear it working - no extraneous noise.

Mechanic's stethoscope perhaps or even just along screwdriver to the ear.

Could be the harmonic balancer itself. If the rubber is starting to detach from the hub it could generate a squeak. Brush or spray a little dish soap and water on the back and front of the balancer and run to see if goes away!

Definitely use the stethoscope, with could still be lots of things from fuel pump to bushings or even seals

I did get a mechanic's stethoscope (before I took all the belts off). Not sure how to use in this case though. Can't touch the spinning balancer... I am thinking it might be related to engine vibrations. I also have a small idle surging problem (within 50 rpm range) that adds to engine vibration. Could that be the culprit?

I had a squeak i could not locate as well. I have a 5.7gsi pefs but if your water pump is the same, it could be the rubber "Gummy" on the water pump bracket. I replaced mine (It was actually gone) and no more squeak! Number 27 on this drawing. part number 3857954

Had a similar issue recently that was actually coming from the back of the engine (year old gimbal bearing failed). Sound reflections can fool you. Get a piece of heater hose or garden hose and place near the parts that could be making the noise and the other end to your ear. An ear plug in the opposite ear can help. When the hose gets near the noise it’ll be obvious.
