Got the stepson's Mk IV 454 hangin' from a couple of fence stretchers, and supported underneath by the motor mounts. The PO had a vandal doing maintenance on this thing. I replaced the rubber/copper LP gas line with a coated steel brake line, replaced cracked distributor cap, relocated the dipstick, relocated the oil filter, replaced, and properly shimmed the starter, and lit it off. I dropped the pump intake hose in a trash can full of water, with the garden hose running in the can. This thing is cammed up some, has an Edlebrock AirGap intake, Edlebrock marine 1410 carb. When it idles, sometimes the starboard exhaust tube doesn't blow as much water as the port. Once I fired it up, and no water came out either side. I coupled the garden hose directly to the intake hose, ran it a few on house water pressure, disconnected the garden hose again, and fired it with the intake in the trash can, and it pulled water again. What is it with this intermittent water flow business? I took the water pump out before I started it, and the impeller was twisted upon installation for a right hand motor. I reinstalled it with a taste of olive oil, 'any kind of grease being better than no grease'. I also thought maybe it was replaced because the previous impeller let go, so I took the hose off that feeds the oil/ps cooler, no pieces of impeller. I've looked in all the hoses, but I don't see anything. I'm worried. What else can I do to be sure this thing is reliable?

Ayuh,.... Water pumps would rather Push, than Suck....
With the hull in the water, the water pump is flooded, so it Pushs, not Sucks...

Well I'll be hornswaggled and cannon shot! So, those soft impeller blades are just deflecting and pulling away from the impeller cavity wall when there's air on the pressure side of'em, water on the suction side? I feel like another one of those little lights just flicked on in my head. Thanks for the response, BondO.
