I am pretty sure we are getting a new Hurricane. I was originally intent on getting a 188, due to its smaller size and perceived greater manueverability, ease of trailering, ease of lauching on a boat ramp, etc. However, now I am considering a 201 because it doesn't seem that much larger (on paper). Also, the price difference on similarly equipped models (188 vs 201) is around 2k, so not to bad. Both boats come with the 4.3 MPI v-6 Mercruiser. Any thoughts? Has anyone who has gotten a 188 wished they went for a 201? Thanks for any relipes.

Re: SS 188 or SS 201

I have the 188 and a friend has a 201 so I'm familiar somewhat with the differences. As a 188 owner, there are a few main differences that stand out to me.

One, side entry. Easier on the 201 with step down similar to the front step down but the trade off is no cushioning there for seating after the boat is boarded.

Two, small sink on 201 vs covered storage compartment on the 188. I only use my boat in freshwater lakes so I never would use the sink/tank for fresh water.

Three, ski locker. If you plan to store long skis/wakeboards or even a trolling motor, the locker door and compartment is much smaller on the 188 vs the 201 (this is where I prefer the 201 over my 188)

Four, portable table standard on 188, but may be an option on the 201. In 3 seasons, never used it so it wouldn't matter.

Five, hardware. I believe all of the bimini hardware on the 201 is stainless steel vs plastic on the 188. The plastic over time (especially in hot sun, will after 6-7 years become brittle and fail). At that point, I'll replace them with SS hardware.

Six, stereo location. On the 201 its higher on the dash, on the 188 it is lower towards your feet. Difficult to see the lower position (display in sunny conditions) I simply swapped its spot with the switch panel above it to put it in the proper location.

As for maneuverability, trailering, etc. I've driven both and as you've said, on paper, essentially the same boat. With the same engine plus hull design, these will be consistent across both platforms.

Not sure if I missed anything but interior space, size, weight, etc are so close, you need to look at the smaller details and see what the extra 2k gets you. I'm happy with my 188 (minus the few items I've commented on)

Good luck and let us know what you decide. Happy boat shopping!

-That is one of my issues. Easier boarding but it seems like someone would like to sit there once the boat is underway.

-All of the bimini hardware will be stainless on the 188 that I will order.
-It is a tough call. Thanks for your response. I will reply when we decide.
