Funny that splash wells should come up. I was working on the boat this weekend to remove some chalking in the well that was the wrong stuff and not paintable. I noticed that the seams down the sides of the well opened up a bit (wider toward the area above the doors to the gas tanks.) Now I know why the doors are a bit tight. Perhaps someone was stepping into the boat from the back onto the top rail. No no - not done. Anyway it turns out that the brackets that take the rivets on each side have cracked and the entire panel has dipped forward slightly. (3/16") into the interior of the boat.

This makes sense because it takes stress and the brackets are made by simply bending the sheet on a 90 degree angle, fatiguing the metal on day one. My plan is to replace them with something a bit beefier after I get things back into line.

Has anyone seen this before on their boat? It has to be a common stress point. The old thing to my eye is that the entire well is just sitting there on both sides with no riveting along its sides. It doesn't look very structural at all - just a water shield.

Re: SS Splash Well Two

Have that also, there is resto thread with a pic where a guy L bracketed it in place. I will do that also in addition to it being attached to the custom aft deck I will build including using aluminum jacks to post it up from underneath, then the ugly thing will be carpeted to flow into the aft deck. This will all tie into tightening up fore and aft as well as star to port.
