Sta-bil, Star Tron, or Both?

Each product has a couple benefits which the other doesn't, so which to use? Sta-bil Marine formula has anti-corrosive properties which Star tron doesn't. Star Tron, on the other hand, handles phase seperation directly...which Sta-bil doesn't.

I'm wondering if it's acceptable to use both products together, so as to have the best of both worlds.

I use startron and ring free. I have been told that ring free and sea foam are equivalent.

Both are excellent products and you'll find support for both on this forum. The experience of thousands of boaters proves that you can't make a bad choice on this subject. Having said all of that....I'm a StarTron guy.

Sta-bil. Tried and true, been around forever. Haven't tried the 'marine' version yet, but going to take another look next time I need to buy some. From an earlier thread, seems it might be cheaper to use than the other. I also occasionally use Seafoam, also a staple of classic automobile guys for years and years.

I simply don't believe all the Star-Tron claims, but that's strictly a matter of opinion. As someone else said, i don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

I'm with JoLin. Regular (non-marine) Sta-bil has served me well for 20+ years and I have no intention to change.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!!

Neither product will prevent phase separation, so you' re looking for a fuel stabilizer/ carbon guard

According to the MSDS of both products, both products are 95% or more Naptha. Stabil list the remaining 5% is a corrosion inhibitor. Startron lists the remaining 0.5% as a proprietary enzyme.
The napth in both products is used as the stabilizer and carbon inhibitor. Stabil, is advertised as a stablizer. Startron, is marketed as a miracle cure for all that ails your fuel.

The decision boils down to, do you want the extra corrosion inhibitors in your tank or do you believe Stratron?s claim that 1/2 of an eye dropper full of this miracle enzyme in 100 gallons of fuel will?. ?clean the entire fuel delivery system, removing performance robbing gum and varnish deposits while modifying how gas and diesel burn, this results in more complete and uniform combustion and therefore better fuel economy?
E-10 fuel does the exact same thing to your fuel delivery system so I?d be inclined to use Stabil and leave the enzymes for my septic tank.

I am with Dingbat on this one. Startron is snake oil, IMHO. Stabil is useful for storing fuel over winter, but unnecessary during the season.

It is your money, however, to spend anyway you want......

Go to: Marine Fuel Additives for ingredients, pros/cons on most products. Personally I have used with great success the Ringfree and the Stabil Marine, those 2 with a fuel/water separater and you should eliminate most fuel problems.

Re: Sta-bil, Star Tron, or Both?

I was speaking to the owner of a boat place around here and he was asking about my boat. I told him it was brand new, 25 hrs on the clock, but i had a little hesitation issue. He asked what additive I used. I told him nada. He recommended one or the other product. Startron had a $5 mail in rebate, so that won out.

It didn't cure my hesitation, which I think is something adjusted wrong in the carb, but it sure did make a noticable difference in how the boat starts up right after it leaves the trailer. I'm a carbed 4.3, and before the snakeoil, it was 2 pumps of the throttle, start, die, start, run fine. Now it's 1 pump of the throttle and we're off...no second pump or start required.

That being said, I think Tractor Supply Comp. has the Stabil marine stuff for 1/2 the price I just paid for the star tron, so I'll probably go that route next.

I've been using the regular Stabil for decades, tried and true. I recently started using the Marine Stabil in my Honda 9.9 and although its a seat of the pants thing, it starts easier, I wasn't expecting to notice any difference. As far as fuel system cleaners, I use Techron, I put it in my truck and jeep and you can feel the improvement. Chevron makes it and puts it in their gas and other gas companies buy it from them.

The OP didn't say what motor he was dealing with, but Techron says right on the bottle not for 2 strokes.

yeah, I'm sorry I should have been clear on that, I don't ADD Techron to my two stroke fuel, however I do use Chevron that already has it in there, but its at a much smaller percentage and I know at least some of the two stroke ob manuals recommend using fuel with the fuel system cleaner additives in them.
