Stabil, another one

OK, so I use Stabil (not marine)in most everything for long or off season storage. Lawn mower, motor cycle, boat motor, weed trimmer, etc. I moved not long ago and found some old stabil, like maybe 6 to 10 years oldish best guess. A couple of large bottles, one opened half gone and one still full and new. Was stored in my garage, back of shelf, through both hot and freezing weather. Lots of info on here of using or not using, different brands, who's the best, waste of money, best thing in the world, etc. Not interested please about use or not use.

Now, the question: What if any might be the shelf life of StaBil?

Stabil is of little benefit with ethanol blended gas. Two cycle marine oil TWC-3 already contains a fuel stabilizer.

Hum.....where do I buy this "TWC-3" oil that when stored in my oil tank, negates the need for stabilizer in my fuel tanks?

The normal TCW-3 oil doesn't have this benefit...lol

From Stabil website:
The effectiveness of older, opened bottles of STA-BIL? can also be determined by a color examination due to the dye included in the formulation. As the dye ages, it gets darker. An older variation of this dye may also crystallize as it ages and form flakes in the bottle. These flakes are actually a result of oxidation and the stabilizer will no longer be able to offer the protection to gasoline that a newer bottle will.

An unopened bottle of STA-BIL? Fuel Stabilizer will remain viable on the shelf for approximately five years because its exposure to oxygen has been limited in a factory sealed container when it is kept in a cool, dry place. Although oxygen can still permeate the bottle, it does so at a much slower rate than if the bottle were opened. However, please note that excessive heat can speed up the oxidation process.

Extended storage of unopened STA-BIL? bottles is not recommended. Make sure you purchase bottle sizes that can be used within two (2) years of purchase.

OK TCW my fingers got got ahead of themselves. TCW3 has additives to make it act like a stabilizer and prevent varnish . The branded Stabilizer breaks down with oxygenated fuels (ethanol).

The shelf life is greatly increased if you stablize your stabil immediately after opening.

Don't use the old red stabil in E10. They quietly changed the formula of that stuff years ago when they found out it turned into red gelatin when mixed with E10.

I use Evinrude XD-50 mostly. It has carbon guard in the formulation but I've never heard of an oil with a stabilizer. Doesn't really make sense. Stabilizer in the oil is useless in an injected engine in mine.

I've heard that 1) The Old STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer is no good with the new fuels. 2) Red STA-BIL Fuel stabilizer gums up carburetors/engines 3) Old STA-BIl no longer works. 4) A mechanic told me to stop using STA-BIL, and that I should use a different STA-BIL product now.

A: STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer is designed to be used during storage or infrequent use in any gasoline engine, and will keep any gasoline (even Ethanol blends, up to E-85) fresh for up to 12 months. The STA-BIL? formula was improved over a year ago to include additional corrosion protection to protect against the damaging effects experienced when using Ethanol blended fuels. STA-BIL is compatible with ALL 2 and 4 cycle engines, and will absolutely NOT harm any components in an engine. The best way to protect your fuel system from Ethanol blended fuels related issues year-round (not just during storage), we recommend using new STA-BIl Ethanol Treatment. For Marine engines, such as a boat or jet-ski, we recommend Marine Formula STA-BIL Ethanol Treatment which has been specifically formulated for the extra severe conditions faced by these engines.

I did not realize it had been re-formulated to work with oxygenated fuels....good to know. TCW oil has anti rust and corrosion inhibitors built into it. Not all outboards are fuel injected.

This is what always cracks me up about Stabil. While they specifically mention #2 - they never come out and say if it was true or not, just move on to marketing this years version. The change they made to stop that from happening was more like 5 years ago. Those of use who were cleaning red gelatin balls out of our carbs definitely remember ;)
